چکیده

Although Apis mellifera is the dominant managed pollinator used to enhance crop production, variation of its foraging behaviour among crop-cultivars not considered as a factor influencing pollination success and, thus, yield. Almond production highly dependent on cross-pollination. Herein, we examined honey bees and pollen limitation in ‘Nonpareil’ ‘Independence’ cultivars. Nectar pollen-foragers differed flower handling behaviour, regardless cultivar. However, most flowers collected morning exhibited less floral constancy this cultivar, potentially promoting Also, supplementation with had positive effect nut-set, suggesting that higher visitation rates are needed increase Our study underlines importance integrating behavioural knowledge pollinators optimize practices pollinator-dependent crops.

Genetic determinants of honey bee foraging behaviour

The amount of pollen stored in honey bee, Apis mellifera, colonies is a selectable trait. Five generations of two-way selection resulted in high and low strains that differed more than six-fold in quantities of stored pollen. Comparisons with hybrid crosses suggested that colony-level, high pollen-hoarding behaviour is inherited as a recessive trait. Colony levels of stored honey, however, show...

Honey bee (Apis mellifera) colony health and pathogen composition in migratory beekeeping operations involved in California almond pollination

Honey bees are important pollinators of agricultural crops. Pathogens and other factors have been implicated in high annual losses of honey bee colonies in North America and some European countries. To further investigate the relationship between multiple factors, including pathogen prevalence and abundance and colony health, we monitored commercially managed migratory honey bee colonies involv...

Bee behaviour in multi-agent systems: A bee foraging algorithm

In this paper we present a new, non-pheromone-based algorithm inspired by the behaviour of biological bees. The algorithm combines both recruitment and navigation strategies. We investigate whether this new algorithm outperforms pheromone-based algorithms in the task of foraging. From our experiments, we conclude that (i) the non-pheromone-based algorithm is significantly more efficient when fi...

Native bees buffer the negative impact of climate warming on honey bee pollination of watermelon crops.

If climate change affects pollinator-dependent crop production, this will have important implications for global food security because insect pollinators contribute to production for 75% of the leading global food crops. We investigate whether climate warming could result in indirect impacts upon crop pollination services via an overlooked mechanism, namely temperature-induced shifts in the diu...
